Learning Swahili

I started learning Swahili today and was surprised to see how many words I already knew!  You may know some as well.

I learned a few words from the Lion King:

Hakuna Matata: No worries Click here sing along with Timon, Pumbaa and Simba
Simba: Lion
Rafiki: Friend

When I was working with seniors, I used to use the Putumayo Kids African Playground CD for my armchair aerobics class.  I would sing along and never knew what I was saying.  Now I do!!

Here are some of the lyrics: click here to sing along to a sample of the song
Jambo, Jambo bwana
Habari gani?
Nzuri sana.

Now I know, here's the translation:
Hello, hello man
How are you?
I am fine, thank you.

Other words that I learned today that I am trying to remember from memory:
Mimi: I
Sisi: We
Wewe: You (sing)
Nyinyi: You (plur)
Yeye: He/She

Wao: They
Mama: Woman
Kiswahili:  Swahili

Words that sound like Hebrew words (Hebrew word in brackets):
Elfu: Thousand (Elef)
Hamisini: Fiftey (Hamishi)
Mia:  Hundred (Mea)
Saa: Time/hour (Sha'a)
Dakika: Minute (Daka)
Damu: Blood (Dam)

I have a lot more to learn but this is a start :)
